
Health is more than just the absence of physical illness and disease. It encompasses the mental, emotional, and social wellbeing of a chilld. Health programs recognize and eliminate risk factors that result in negative health outcomes. Attendance, behavior, and academic achivement can be affected when students are not healthy.
Current initiatives:
- The Kalamazoo County Health & Community Services Dental Clinic comes to the schools to perform dental exams and sealant procedures on students.
- Health education, medicine management, and care plans for allergies and chronic diseases are provided by senior nursing students from Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo Valley Community College, in partnership with a Kalamazoo Public Schools nurse.
- Mental health services through the Elizabeth Upjohn Community Healing Center, Family & Children Services, and other partners are connected with students who can benefit from individual counseling.
- The School-Based Health Center at Edison Environmental Science Academy gives on-site access to students of Edison, as well as members of the adjacent Boys and Girls Club.
- Grief and loss support groups are facilitated by Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan
