For most kids, staying in school through graduation is a sure thing, despite the challenges all young people face while growing up. For others, just making it through middle school is an uphill battle. Family problems, unstable housing, poverty or chronic illness may mean that students fall behind in school, don't regularly see a dentist or doctor, struggle with emotional issues, come to school hungry or have limited support for doing well in school.
The key? Meet their needs during and after school so they'll stay in school. That's how Communities In Schools of Kalamazoo works - going into the schools to meet the physical, social and emotional needs of students. CIS is affiliated with the Communities In Schools national organization.
